Base
oil, also known as base stock or base fluid, is a primary component in the production of lubricants, which are used extensively in various industries.
Base oil comes in 2 categories : Virgin and Recycled
Virgin
base
oil is freshly refined from crude oil and offers high purity and performance for lubricant applications.
Recycled
base
oil is processed from used lubricants, providing an environmentally friendly alternative while maintaining quality and performance.
Automotive Industry: Base oil is used to formulate engine oils, transmission fluids, gear oils, and hydraulic fluids for vehicles. These lubricants help reduce friction, heat, and wear between moving parts, extending the life of engines and mechanical components.
Industrial Machinery: Base oil is used in industrial machinery such as pumps, compressors, turbines, and manufacturing equipment to ensure smooth operation and prevent damage caused by friction and heat.
Aerospace: In aerospace applications, base oil is used in the formulation of lubricants for aircraft engines, landing gears, hydraulic systems, and other critical components to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Marine Industry: Base oil is used in marine applications for lubricating ship engines, gearboxes, and other machinery to prevent corrosion and reduce friction in harsh marine environments.
Metalworking and Machining: Base oil is used as a coolant and lubricant in metalworking and machining processes such as cutting, grinding, and milling to improve efficiency and extend tool life.
Power
Generation: Base oil is utilized in power generation equipment such as turbines and generators to reduce friction and maintain proper lubrication, ensuring reliable and efficient operation.
Railroad: Base oil is used in rail applications for lubricating locomotive engines, wheel bearings, and other critical components to ensure safe and reliable rail transportation.
Mining and Construction: Base oil is used in heavy equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, and loaders to lubricate moving parts and reduce wear and tear in demanding mining and construction environments.
SN 150, SN 500, and SN 650, are common grades of base oils:
S
N 150 Base Oil:
SN 150 is a light viscosity base oil, typically produced through hydroprocessing of crude oil fractions.
It has a kinematic viscosity in the range of 11 to 22 centistokes (cSt) at 40°C.
SN 150 base oil is commonly used in the formulation of various lubricants such as hydraulic fluids, industrial gear oils, and metalworking fluids.
It offers good solvency, thermal stability, and low volatility, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
S
N 500 Base Oil:
SN 500 is a mid-range viscosity base oil, also produced through hydroprocessing.
It has a kinematic viscosity in the range of 30 to 37 centistokes (cSt) at 40°C.
SN 500 base oil is versatile and widely used in the production of automotive lubricants, including engine oils and transmission fluids.
It provides excellent oxidative stability, low volatility, and good viscosity characteristics, making it suitable for both light and heavy-duty applications.
SN 650 Base Oil:
SN 650 is a heavier viscosity base oil compared to SN 150 and SN 500.
It has a kinematic viscosity in the range of 60 to 74 centistokes (cSt) at 40°C.
SN 650 base oil is commonly used in the formulation of industrial lubricants, including gear oils, turbine oils, and hydraulic fluids for heavy machinery and equipment.
It offers high film strength, excellent thermal stability, and resistance to oxidation, making it suitable for demanding applications in harsh operating conditions.
Base oil can be transported in bulk or packaged form. Bulk
transportation typically involves tank trucks (Flexi tank containers) or
railcars, while packaged transportation may use drums or intermediate bulk
containers (IBCs).
Trucking: Tanker trucks are commonly used for transporting bulk quantities of base oil over short to medium distances. Drivers must be trained in handling hazardous materials and follow strict safety protocols.
Rail: Rail transport is used for long-distance shipments of bulk base oil. Railcars equipped with specialized tanks are utilized, and railways must comply with safety regulations and scheduling requirements.
Marine: Base oil can be transported via ships for long-distance international shipments. Flexi-tanks (Flexibags) designed for liquid cargo are used in containers in this method.
Storage and Handling:
At transit points such as terminals or distribution centers, base
oil needs to be stored properly in tanks or containers that meet safety and environmental standards. Loading and unloading operations must be conducted carefully to prevent spills or contamination.
Temperature Control:
Base oil may have specific temperature requirements during transportation to maintain its viscosity and other properties. Insulated tanks or containers and temperature-controlled transport equipment may be used, especially for shipments traveling through extreme climates.

Flexi tanks are the most common transportation method for the base oil because of their capacity , price and easy application. they can store upto 24 tons of the product.
Flexi-tanks are easily fitted into the containers (Lashing) Before filling up and then being filled by the valves from the top.
IIBC Tanks are another choices when it comes to Road or Marine transportation. Each IBC Tank contains 1 metric ton of Base Oil and 20 Tanks are loaded to a 20' container.
Steel or plastic drums are another used packaging in this industry. Drums are normally taking 208 litres of the base oil and can be placed on the pallets by 4 pieces.
